West Ham United or 'The Hammers' as they are commonly known as were founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks by company owner Arnold Hills and foreman Dave Taylor. 'The Irons' progressed from friendly soccer to the Southern League First Division in five short years before financial difficulties forced the club to change hands and change name becoming West Ham United in July of 1900. 'The Hammers' made a promising move in 1919 joining the Football League and securing their place in the top leagues of English Soccer. The club has never left the Football League but at the same time has never won the prized League One / Premier League title instead taking out the coveted FA Cup on 3 occasions and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965.
West Ham has called the 35,500 capacity Upton Park their home since 1904. The clubs home jersey had featured three different designs as Thames Ironworks but as West Ham they have always worn the claret and blue. The current jersey designer is Umbro who have adapted the Ironworks colours of sky blue and white into West Ham's away and third jerseys.
The club emblem has had changes made but the essentials have remained the same the crossed pair of rivet hammers were the original logo in 1895 with a castle added in 1903/4 before a modern update in 1987 and another in 1998.
