US Women Soccer
The USA Women's team played their first match in 1985, on August 18th against Italy losing 1-0. The game went largely unnoticed by the sporting press, over the next week they played three more times against Denmark twice and England, drawing once against the Danes. By 1986 the United states were making major progress with wins over Brazil, China and Canada to establish themselevs as a power in the women's game.
The most famous players to wear the USA Womens Soccer jersey have been Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly number 1 and number 2 in both caps and goals for the national side. The success the side have had was noticed by the US press finally in 1999 when Sports Illustrated magazine chose the entire national side Sportspeople of the Year.
In five women's world cups the USA have won twice and placed third on three occassions, at the Olympics since Women's soccer became an event, in four tournamants the United States have won gold three times and silver once, whilst at the CONCACAF Gold Cup the women have won each time they have competed.
