Sweden played its first international game against Norway, on 12 July 1908, and won it 11-3. Other games in 1908 were against England, Netherlands and Belgium. Sweden lost all three games. Sweden also competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics but were defeated by an English Amateur team 1-12, which is Sweden's biggest defeat. From 1910 to 1930 Sweden exclusively played friendly games; in 1916 Sweden beat Denmark for the first time.

Sweden are currently ranked 25 in FIFA's world rankings. They have appeared in 11 world cup tornaments since 1934 and their best result has been runners-up in 1958 (a tournament which was hosted by Sweden). Sweden have also appeared in 4 European Championships and their best finish was in the semi-finals. Sweden have also won 1 goldand 2 bronze medals at th Olympics. Sweden's most capped player is Thomas Ravelli with 143 caps and their top goalscorer is Sven Rydell with 49 goals.

Sweden play their home games at the Råsunda Fotbollstadion in Stockholm. The stadium has a capacity of 36,608 but it will be replaced in 2011 by the new national stadium Swedbank Arena. Sweden's home colours have always been the traditional yellow and their current away colours is navy blue. The jerseys are currently manufactured by Umbro.
