Sunderland Soccer

Sunderland AFC is based in Tyne and Wear county in the Northeast of England. It was founded in 1879 by schoolteacher James Allan as a club for teachers only, but in 1881, other professions were allowed to join. The club joined the soccer League in 1890, and currently plays in the Premier League. Their stadium is called the Stadium of Light, which was opened in 1997, prior to which the club played in Roker Park, now demolished and converted into a housing estate.

Sunderland have won a total of six First Division titles in their 130-year history. These triumphs came in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913 and 1936. Other honours include the 1936/37 and 1972/73 FA Cups, the 1936 Charity Shield, and the 1903 Sheriff of London Charity Shield. The club was taken over by the Drumaville Consortium in 2006, consisting of 7 Irish businessmen, chaired by former Irish striker Niall Quinn, himself an ex-player of Sunderland. Quinn appointed ex-Man Utd captain Roy Keane as coach who led the team to promotion back to the Premiership. However, Keane resigned on the 100-game mark on the 4th December 2008, to be replaced by ex-Man Utd reserve team coach Ricky Sbragia. The club's biggest rival is Newcastle United.

Jerseys for Sunderland are manufactured by Umbro. Sunderland signed a sponsorship deal with Boylesport in 2007 which expires in 2011 and is worth up to £12m. The Black Cats, as they are nicknamed, have vertically striped jerseys. The home jersey is white and red, complemented by black shorts and red socks. The away jersey is blue and darker blue, with dark blue shorts and blue socks.
