The club was renamed to San Jose Earthquakes on the 27th October 1999. San Jose Earthquakes is based in California, being one of three MLS clubs to be from this state. It plays its home games in Buck Shaw stadium, which can hold 10300 fans. San Jose stopped participating in the MLS between 2005 and 2008, this season being the second since their return to soccer. In MLS 2008, the first after their return, they finished last in the 7-team Western Conference with 33 points from 30 games.
The club's games which attract bigger crowds are played at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum which has a capacity of 47416. A new stadium is currently being built and scheduled to open between 2010 and 2011. San Jose Earthquakes signed a partnership agreement with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspurs in 2008, with the main aim being marketing but having secondary roles such as playing friendlies, using training facilities, and expanding the respective brands. The club is owned by Earthquakes Soccer LLC, and the team is coached by Frank Yallop from Canada. Over its history, San Jose Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice and the Supporters' Shield once.
Just like all MLS clubs, the kits of San Jose Earthquakes are manufactured by German sportswear giants Adidas. A new jersey sponsorship was announced on the 27th January 2009, where Amway Global became the Earthquakes' sponsors in a 3-year deal. The fact that Amway Global sponsors AC Milan too makes the deal more prestigious for the MLS club, which has not had a very bright return to the MLS in the past season. The home jersey of the club is black with blue details, and complemented by blue shorts and black socks. The away kit consists of a white jersey with blue details, blue shorts and white socks.
