The Russian national soccer team is controlled by the Football Union of Russia, and forms part of the European UEFA confederation. The team is considered to be the direct successor to the USSR and CIS by FIFA, but once the Russian team was established, former honours and records were no longer considered. Since the Russian team was established, their highest ranking was 3rd while the lowest was 40th. Their ranking in February 2009 is 9th. The first Russian competitive match was played against Mexico on the 16th August 1992 in Moscow, and the Russians triumphed by 2 goals to nil. Russia's biggest win was 7-0 against San Marino.
Russia participated twice in a World Cup: United States 1994 and Korea-Japan 2002, not counting the appearances of the USSR. On both occasions, the Russian national team did not manage to get past the group stage of the competition, winning one and losing two. Russia made three appearances in the European Championship, and their most successful was the last edition held in Austria-Switzerland where the team managed to get through the group stage for the first time in an international competition, and under the guidance of Guus Hiddink, go through to the semi-final stage. Under the guidance of the same coach, they are trying to reach World Cup 2010 to be held in South Africa, with their biggest rivals being Germany. The all-time top goalscorer is Vladimir Beschastnykh with 26 goals, while the record holder for the biggest number of caps is Viktor Onopko with 109.
The Russian uniforms are presently manufactured by Adidas after a $100 million mega-deal with the German giants signed on the 1st September 2008. Previously, jerseys were manufactured by Reebok and Nike. The home uniform consists of a red jersey, red shorts, and red socks, while the away uniform is all white. Both jerseys have the enlarged Russian crest watermarked on them.
