Associazione Sportiva Roma or AS Roma is one of the most successful and well known Italian football clubs playing in Serie A. The club was founded in the summer of 1927 by Italo Foschi, who initiated the merger of three older Italian Football Championship clubs from the city of Rome; Roman, Alba-Audace and Fortitudo. The purpose of the merger was to give the Eternal City a strong club to rival that of the more dominant Northern Italian clubs of the time.
Roma have participated at the top-tier of Italian football for all of their existence except for one season in the early 1950s. Roma have won Serie A three times, won the Coppa Italia 9 times and once finished runners up of the European Cup in 1984.
