New York Red Bull was founded in 1995, two years after the Major League Soccer was set up in the United States, but as the first season was played in 1996, New York Red Bull was a founding member in the initial 10-team league. At the time, the club was named New York/New Jersey Metrostars: a name which was changed in 1997. Between 1998 and 2006, the team was called Metrostars, but due to a takeover by energy drink company Red Bull GmbH on the 9th March 2006, the club changed its name to New York Red Bull.
The American club currently plays its home games in 80242-seater Giants Stadium in New Jersey. However, they are currently constructing a new arena in Harrison called Red Bull Arena, scheduled to open its doors in 2010 and can hold 25189 supporters. New York Red Bull is managed by Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio. In the 2008 MLS season, the 13th year in the history of the relatively new competition, New York Red Bulls ranked 5th in 7-team Eastern Conference.
The club crest has been changed 4 times: the first two having the words Metrostars, while the more recent two using the Red Bull logo, a graphic of two bulls about to lock horns on a yellow circle with a soccer in the middle. New York Red Bulls won the Eastern league in 2000 and were runners-up in the 2008 MLS Cup. jerseys for New York Red Bull are manufactured by Adidas. The club sponsor, unsurprisingly Red Bull, has its enlarged logo on the middle of the jersey. A highlight of the 2009/10 kits is the mandarin style collar used. The home jersey is white with red details, while the away kit is navy blue with grey details.
