The Portuguese national soccer team is controlled by the Federacao Portuguesa de Futebol and forms part of the European confederation UEFA. In the rankings of February 2009, Portugal are ranked 12th in the table. Their range of positions over their history was between 4th and 43rd. The first competitive match was played on the 18th December 1921 against neighbours Spain, which Portugal lost 3-1 in Madrid. Portugal's biggest ever win was 8-0 against three clubs over the years: twice against Liechtenstein and once against Kuwait. Their biggest defeat was at the hands of England with a score of 10-0, something which the Portuguese made the English pay for, as they knocked them twice out of a major competition in the last decade.
Portugal appeared four times in a World Cup, with the first time being back in 1966. In this tournament hosted by England, Portugal earned the third place. In 1986 and 2002, they did not get past the group stage, while in 2006 they finished in the fourth place. Portugal played in 5 editions of the European Championship, 1984 being the first time. Their best result was in Portugal 2004 when the team ranked as runners-up at home, when they lost 1-0 to Greece. Luis Figo holds the record of the most Portugal caps with 127 appearances, while Pauleta is the all-time top scorer finding the net 47 times.
Nike are the manufacturers of the Portuguese soccer home and away strips. The home uniform is mainly red with green details on the sides and on the collar. The home shorts and home socks are also red. The away uniform is made up of a white jersey with a red collar and green side details, white shorts and white socks.
