Olympique Lyon is a French club playing in the Ligue 1, which is the top tier of French football. They are nicknamed OL, for the initials of the club name, and Les Gones, meaning the kids. OL was founded in 1899, but it was a multisport club, and the football section split up from the rest of the club in 1950. Their present owner is Jean-Michel Aulas, who took charge in 1987, and invested heavily to turn the club into a major force in France and Europe. Lyon's stadium is the Stade Gerland, opened in 1926 with expansions in 1960, 1980 and 1998. Its capacity currently stands at 41044.
The team manager is Claude Puel. Puel was a midfielder in his playing days and played only for AS Monaco, earning 488 appearances in 17 years. He went on to manage Monaco between 1999 and 2001, and took over the reigns at OL in 2008 after a stint with Lille Metropole. He is the fourth manager in the last four years, preceeded by Paul Le Guen, Gerard Houllier and Alain Perrin. In the new millennium, Olympique Lyon have become the greatest team in France, winning all the Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008. 2002 was the first time that Lyon won the Ligue 1 title. Other honours were 4 times winners of the Coupe de France, 7 times the Trophees des Champions, the 2001 Coupe de la Ligue, and the 1997 Intertoto Cup amongst others. Lyon won the 2007/08 season with 79 points, 4 more than runners-up Bordeaux. It looks as if the present season will have the same outcome, where Lyon will probably make it eight in a row!
Olympique Lyon's jersey manufacturer and designer is English brand Umbro. Their playing uniforms are sponsored by hotel chain Novotel. The home uniform consists of a white jersey with a thin vertical red and blue stripe, white shorts and white socks. The away uniform is all blue. The third uniform uses the same layout of the home jersey but the base colour is yellow instead of white.
