Monaco Soccer

AS Monaco is a club based in the sovereign wealthy city-state of Monaco, enclosed by France. Having a population of just over 30000, and being a state whereby citizens are barely taxed and are considerably rich, Monaco is an independent state but its defence is the responsibility of France. Interestingly, it is the most densely populated country in the world, and the smallest French-speaking nation. The football club was founded on the 23rd August 1924, and participates in the French Ligue 1. The chairman of the club is Jerome de Bontin, a graduated economist and businessman, who was a classmate of Prince Albert of Monaco in the University of Massachusetts. The stadium is the Stade Louis II, named after the Prince of Monaco at the time when the stadium was built in 1939, but was rebuilt in the 1980s. The stadium has a capacity of 18500, fitting around 60% of the whole nation's population.

AS Monaco have won the Ligue 1 title seven times in their history, the most recent in 2000. Also, they won the French Cup 5 times, the French League Cup once, and twice the Trophee des Champions, amongst others. However, the club's biggest success was going all the way to the Champions League Final in 2004, beating majestic clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea on the way. Unfortunately, they did not lift the coveted cup as they lost 3-0 in the Gelsenkirchen (Germany) against eventual Champions Porto. But ranking runners-up in the most prestigious football competition in Europe, and coming from the smallest European country, is not bad at all! In the 2007/08 season, Monaco ranked 12th in the Ligue 1 table.

The Monegasque (meaning from Monaco) club is nicknamed Les Rouge et Blanc, and apart from the club emblem, this Red and Whites nickname applies also to the home uniform. The jersey is divided diagonally, the top part being red and the bottom white. Both the home shorts and the home socks are white. On the other hand, the away uniform consists of light blue jersey, shorts and socks. Puma manufactures the uniforms of Monaco, while the main jersey sponsor is dominant sulphur supplier Fedcom.
