Kansas City Wizards was founded in 1995 and started playing in the MLS from its first season in 1996. Their owner was Lamar Hunt, one of the people who helped set up the Major League Soccer in the United States, and who also owned FC Dallas, Colombus Crew, and Kansas City Chiefs. Initially, they were known as Kansas City Wiz, but this had to be changed due to copyright, and the Wiz remained only as an unofficial nickname.
The club has its home base in Missouri and plays its home games in CommunityAmerica Ballpark, which can hold a maximum of 10385. However, there are plans to build a 20000 to 22000-seat stadium on the premises of demolished Bannister Mall. This new stadium is scheduled for completion midway through the 2010 MLS season. Kansas City Wizards are managed by Curt Onalfo, and owned by OnGoal LLC, as the club was sold by Lamar Hunt in August 2006, just a few months before his death. In the 2008 season, the Wiz ranked 4th from a 7-team Eastern Conference. Honours won over the club's history include the 2000 MLS Cup, the 2000 MLS Community Shield, and the 2004 US Open Cup.
Club jerseys are manufactured by Adidas, as the German manufacturer has monopoly power in the USA league. The Kansas City Wizards jerseys have no sponsor as yet, and their name appears on the front on the jersey until a sponsor is found. The Wiz's home jersey is mainly blue, with black secondary details and yellow piping. The home shorts and socks are blue. The away kit consists of a white jersey with black and blue details, white shorts and white socks.
