Barcelona is presently considered by many to be the most powerful club in Europe. This is due to their consistency in play and staying focussed for every game. Barca finished third in the 2007-08 La Liga season, but things are sure to be different in 2008-09, with the large gap they have established between themselves in the 1st place, and the chasing pack. Developing from a smaller club founded in 1899, Barcelona have gone to win the top tier of Spanish soccer 18 times and ranking as runners-up 22 times. Their stadium, the Nou Camp can hold 98772 supporters and is the largest stadium in Spain, and one of the largest in the world. They are also one of the richest clubs in the world.
Barca are currently managed by 38-year old ex-player of the same club Pep Guardiola, who brought back the winning mentality to the team after a downturn under Frank Rijkaard's reign. Guardiola played at the club between 1990 and 2001 as a midfielder, played 263 games and scored 6. He is a fans' favourite and one of the people responsible for the club's probably successful push for success this season. The team is captained by defender Carles Puyol. Among the wide array of amazing stars at the club are Xavi, Victor Valdes, Iniesta, Eto'o, Henry, Bojan Krkic and one of the world's best players Lionel Messi. Rather than spending huge sums on world-class players from other clubs, something that bitter rivals Real Madrid have become renowned for doing, Barcelona have an excellent youth academy bringing up players themselves for their future. Iniesta, Xavi and Bojan are just three such players, and their ability is undisputable.
The traditional colour for the home kit of Barcelona are red and blue. Their kits are manufactured by Nike, but the club has a policy for having no commercial sponsor logo on their jerseys. An exception was made for Unicef to have their logo on the famous jersey. The 2008/09 kit replaced the stripes of the previous season with a halved jersey, the right half being blue and the left half being red. This has initially drawn criticism for its similarity with the Basel (Switzerland) jersey. The away jersey is yellow with a vertical, blue and red, narrow stripe running down the front-left. The third jersey is the away jersey of 2007/08, having a turquoise base colour.
